Born in 1908 to Hungarian immigrants, Tony Packo was a native of Toledo’s East Side. He learned the restaurant business while working for his older brother, John, who owned the Consaul Tavern located on what is now the Original Tony Packo’s parking lot. In 1932, Tony and his wife, Rose, received a $100 loan to open a sandwich and ice cream shop during the hardest of times in the Great Depression. Tony created his signature sandwich–the Hungarian Hot Dog–which became an instant hit. Due to the success of their family-owned business, Tony and Rose were able to buy a building of their own. They purchased a wedge-shaped establishment at Front and Consaul Streets, which, over the years grew in size and fame as it became home to what is today’s Original Tony Packo’s Restaurant.

Since 1928, Metzger’s German Restaurant has served more than seven million guests. Metzger’s has something for everyone, as it serves both German and American food. Sauerbraten is the house specialty; a marinated roast beef with a sour cream gravy. At the Original Pancake House in Denver Tech Center and Cherry Hills they serve a delicious variety of breakfast and brunch favorites including pancakes of all kinds, crepes, French toast, fluffy omelets, Belgian waffles, benedicts and other hearty egg plates. The Dakota Inn Rathskeller was opened on August 1, 1933 by Karl Kurz, the Grandfather of Karl E. Kurz, the present owner. EIGHTY EIGHT years later, Detroit’s only authentic German bar is still going strong! Third generation Karl E. Kurz is actively running the restaurant. The restaurant has been in the same family for 88 years. The restaurant seats 145 and is just over 2000 square feet. The restaurant is filled with German beer steins, trophy animal heads taken on family hunting trips and family pictures. The restaurant has that authentic “old-world” feeling that comes from the polished dark wood furniture and wall paneling, hand-painted German scenes from Grandfather Kurz’s childhood and servers decked out in traditional German style clothing. Beginning mid-September and for the entire month of October, the Dakota Inn Rathskeller celebrates Germany's traditional fall Oktoberfest”. The Dakota has a downstairs banquet room called the Rathskeller for private parties of up to 50 people.
